Artist Statement
“Life is absurd.”
I have recognized this ever since I became old enough to understand things.
I could not reset myself and was unable to overcome the frustration caused by this.
Then, I instinctively took my pen and began writing.
I don’t doubt what I see.
I can’t even judge it by myself.
The “body” with nowhere to go causes noise in the real world by computerization.
I finally came to my senses when I saw colors in the monochrome world, like floating on a deep sea that remains silent.
As the rock will remain to exist as it is, the dot on a canvas is chained to the next dot by a synapse.
Between the spaces, individuals, between point and point.
What I saw while interpreting the origins of every distance from a micro perspective was extremely simple and very “primitive”.

TOMOYA SHIREI | ARTIST
Tomoya Shirei is a Tokyo-based pen and ink artist born in 1992 in Tokyo. His works are characterized by dense drawings created under the theme of “absurdity in the world”. Using unique motifs like human bodies, cells or liquids, he embodies unverbalizable movements, which change without noticing, such as social communities people belong to in daily life, on-and-off relationships and the individual’s feelings.
In the last few years in particular, Tomoya has been focusing on textures of black ink, approaching experimentally to extend the expression of black ink by using different types of pens and airbrushes, sometimes using garbage or brooms as paintbrushes. It sometimes takes about a week for a sheet of A3 size to be completed, but on average, three to four days.
At the same time, Tomoya has been broadening his horizons by directing his own fashion brand, designing clothes, painting on walls and creating CD cover designs with Japanese bands.
