Robert Capa defined what it was to be a war photographer, laying the foundation for future generations of photojournalists working in the field. A great number of exhibitions and publications regarding him have been made public in Japan as well. Yousuf Karsh is the most famous photographer, taking celebrity portraits in twentieth century. The portrait of Winston Churchill taken in 1941 is one of his master pieces.

Robert Capa and Yousuf Karsh have contrasting approaches to photography, but what they tried to explore as photographers have many things in common. That is, to capture human interiority and express it in photography. Capa caught facial expressions or interiority, which unconsciously changed in the unstable situation of wartime and Karsh captured two elements of models’ private humanity and inner beauty. Why do we sensed a close intimacy and interiority from their works? It may be because both Capa and Karsh shared a common background, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to seek their own place during adolescence. This experience plays a key role in this exhibition. With this in mind, we hope that you enjoy these photographs, which captured the inner characteristics of the subjects with contrastive approaches by photographers, as photographic art in the 20th century.
